Despite their painful history of expulsion, combined with the ban on their language and culture, the Indians were able to partially preserve them and continue to maintain them with pride today.

Their culture includes the traditional dishes of their ancestors. Even though the menu was determined by the seasons, their diet was quite varied. The meal preparation, based on oral traditions within Native American families and tribes, is simple and imaginative. What is not at hand is replaced with something similar.

After a historical review and information about the past and present way of life, 185 recipes that are well over 100 years old follow. Many of them come from the time before the forced resettlement to reservations. A large number of the accompanying photos from national and museum archives also come from the 19th century and provide insights into life back then.

The author has traveled to the USA about fifty times since 1991, mainly to the Southwest and the Plains states. On her eventful tours, she received the recipes at powwows, on reservations, at Indian festivals and at many other personal encounters.
